Born and raised in Fort Wayne, John graduated from Central Catholic H.S. After high school, John joined the Army and served 3 years as an airborne infantryman and parachute rigger with the 82nd Airborne Division. Upon separation from the army, he obtained both BA and MBA degrees from the University of Saint Francis.​ 

After receiving his degrees, John completed Air Force Officer Training School and was commissioned a second lieutenant. He spent the next 14 years as an acquisition officer working with the Aerospace industry. He also served four years as an Assistant Professor at the University of Notre Dame in the Air Force ROTC program. John retired from the Air Force in 1994.

After leaving the Air Force, John obtained an MS degree in counseling and human services from Indiana University. He then accepted a school counseling position at Norwell High School in Ossian, IN, a position he held until his retirement from the school district in 2014.

In addition to providing mediation services, John also serves as the facilitator for the Wells County Dual Assessment Team, and teaches a mediation and conciliation course at Manchester University.

John & his wife Tammy have been married for over 43 years. They are the parents of four and currently have seven grandchildren. John sits on his parish council and is active with the Knights of Columbus.
